5 Common Website Mistakes (and How to Fix Them Without a Full Redesign)

Not every website problem needs a total rebuild. In fact, some of the most common issues are easy to overlook – and surprisingly simple to fix. If you’re managing your own site, these quick checks can make a meaningful difference. Here are five problems we see often, and how to resolve them.

1. No Clear Call-to-Action Above the Fold

When someone lands on your homepage or a landing page, they should instantly understand what to do next. If your call-to-action (CTA) is buried or unclear, you’re likely missing out on conversions.

Fix it: Place a strong, singular CTA above the fold – whether it’s a button, a short lead-capture form, or a modal pop-up. It should be immediately visible without scrolling.

2. Incorrect Use of Heading Tags

It’s common to see heading tags used purely for visual styling – for example, using an H5 just because it looks smaller than an H2. But that breaks the logical structure of your content.

Fix it: Use heading tags to reflect content hierarchy. Stick to proper order (H1 > H2 > H3…) for accessibility and SEO. If you need a certain visual style, use CSS to style a paragraph instead of misusing a heading tag.

3. Not Enough White Space

Tight, crowded layouts make it harder for visitors to read or scan your content. When everything feels crammed together, users disengage quickly.

Fix it: Add more spacing between sections, images, and text. You don’t need a redesign – just some breathing room. CSS tools like clamp() can help keep spacing consistent across screen sizes.

4. Overloaded Navigation Menus

A common mistake is trying to list everything in the main nav. This leads to visual clutter and decision fatigue for visitors.

Fix it: Limit top-level links to the essentials. Group related items into dropdowns, and move less important links to the footer.

5. Poor Mobile Experience

A site that looks polished on desktop can fall apart on smaller screens. Overlapping text, misaligned elements, or buttons that are hard to tap can frustrate users fast.

Fix it: Preview your site on different devices. Ensure text is legible, tap targets are spaced properly, and layout elements stack cleanly.

Small Fixes, Real Results

You don’t need a major overhaul to improve your site. A few thoughtful updates can boost usability, SEO, and conversions — without eating up your whole week.
